Integrated Laboratory Training on Faecal Sludge Analysis by CSE: Empowering Professionals in Faecal Sludge Management

Course Date: July 15–18, 2025
Last Date to Apply: June 30, 2025
Location: Anil Agarwal Environment Training Institute (AAETI), Neemli, Rajasthan
Organized by: Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), in collaboration with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Introduction

In many low- and middle-income countries, including India, non-sewered sanitation systems are essential for managing human waste. As the global emphasis on Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) grows, so does the need for skilled professionals who can handle and analyze faecal sludge and its treated by-products like water and biosolids.

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), through its Environment Monitoring Laboratory (EML) and in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), is offering an intensive Integrated Laboratory Training on Analysis of Faecal Sludge. This unique hands-on training program aims to strengthen laboratory skills in FSM, making participants industry-ready for present and future challenges.

Why This Training Matters

Effective FSM isn't just about treatment—it's also about scientific assessment. Professionals must be equipped to analyze both physico-chemical and biological parameters to ensure public health and environmental safety. This course provides the necessary tools, methodologies, and practical experience to achieve that.

What You Will Learn

Participants will receive expert-led, interactive training in:

🧪 Faecal Sludge Management Fundamentals:

  • Modern approaches and technologies
  • Safe sample collection, storage, and transportation
  • Biosolids safety and hygiene protocols

🔬 Physico-Chemical Analysis:

  • pH, Total Solids (TS), Total Suspended Solids (TSS)
  • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), BOD, COD
  • Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), Ammoniacal Nitrogen
  • Total Phosphate

🦠 Biological and Microbial Analysis:

  • Faecal Coliform, E. coli, Salmonella using CFU/MPN methods
  • Enumeration of Helminth eggs using AmBic/ZnSO₄ methods

⚙️ Advanced Instrumentation & Calibration:

  • Calibration of pH meter, micropipettes, centrifuge, balance, and glassware
  • Heavy metal detection using ICP-OES
  • Nutrient analysis via CHNS analyzer
  • Calorific value estimation using Bomb Calorimeter
